Located to the east of St Augustine just across the Matanzas River and the Intracoastal, Anastasia Island is 15 miles long and just 3 miles at it's widest. There are homes dating back to the early 1900's as well as sub-divisions of newer homes that were built since the 1970's.
Beneath the surface of the island is a bed of coquina stone which is made of compressed shell. This area is one of only a few places in the world where this stone can be found. This was a favorite building material of the Spanish in the early days of St. Augustine. Both Fort Matanzas and the Castillo de San Marcos were constructed of this stone and they are still standing today
St Augustine Beach
The city of St Augustine Beach was incorporated in November of 1959. It has a beautiful white sand beach and a fishing pier. There are play grounds and park facilities at the beach.
Fort Matanzas
In 1569 a wooden watchtower and thatched hut were constructed just north of the Matanzas inlet on Anastasia Island. This was a lookout post watching for possible enemy threats. If a ship was sighted a runner was sent to alert St Augustine.
A 1740 Gov. Manuel De Montiano had a stone structure built to replace the wooden watchtower. The English gained control of Ft Mantanzas and all of Florida by treaty in 1763. They continued to maintain the fort as a watchtower. By the time Florida was ceded to the United States in 1821 the interior of the fort was in ruins.
On October 15, 1924 the fort was proclaimed a national monument and in 1933 control of the fort was transferred from the War Department to the National Park Service. Since then the fort was restored to it's original design.
