The Bridge of Lions
The Bridge of Lions is a part of the history of St Augustine. The bridge was built to replace an original wooden bridge that had been constructed in 1895. That bridge had been renovated in 1905 to accommodate an electric trolley. Work began in 1925 and the bridge was opened to traffic in 1927. The current rehabilitation began in February of 2005 and the completion is scheduled for 2010. The project includes the construction of a temporary bridge to facilitate traffic during the renovation.
In 1924, Dr. Andrew Anderson, a friend of Henry Flagler, donated two Carrera marble lions for the new bridge. The two lions, that watch over the approach to the bridge, became the symbols of the bridge.
